A diet rich in fats and meat does not increase a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer, according to a large, ethnically diverse study.

The researchers examined the diets of over 82,400 men aged 45 or older, from four ethnic groups (African American, Japanese Americans, Latinos, and Whites). They measured the participants’ intake of the following components:

  • Different fats (including saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fat, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids)
  • Cholesterol
  • Meat (including total, red, processed, and poultry)
  • Fish
  • Fats from meat

After eight years of follow-up, the study found no association between the intake of fat and meat and prostate cancer risk or advanced tumors.

A “weak protective effect” was found between the intake of omega-3 fats and prostate cancer in Whites and Latinos.

Fats and Meats are Not the Cause of Prostate Cancer by Dr. Mercola - October 27, 2007

Every year more than 70 million people resolve to lose weight by going on a diet, which feeds the big, fat $58 billion diet and weight-loss industry. After all the money is wasted, the cold, harsh reality is that fewer than 5 percent of dieters will realize long-term results. The other 95 percent will regain all the weight they lost, and then some. How can an industry survive with such a low success rate? How can it be legal to market and sell something that has a proven track record for failure? Now consumers have a brand new diet deception being marketed to them backed with over $150 million in marketing to spin the weight-loss lie.

Consumers desperately searching for solution to their weight challenges now have easy access to the new FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) weight-loss drug Orlistat, marketed under the name Alli. Lest you think this is a brand new drug that will deliver the much sought after solution to the obesity epidemic, think again. This “new” drug isn’t new at all. Orlistat is simply a lower-dose version of the prescription weight-loss drug Xenical, which has had zero impact on moving the fat meter in our society. Making Orlistat available to consumers over-the-counter only means that tens of millions of people will now have false hopes of sustained weight-loss while being exposed to toxic, synthetic chemical compounds.

Prior to the Orlistat approval, manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) was reeling from the negative reports that their blockbuster diabetes drug Avandia (rosliglitazone) was linked to death from heart attacks and other cardiovascular events. Enter the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to the rescue with the much needed approval of Orlistat that will surely pick up the slack from the Avandia fallout.

But at what cost? In just one year between 1996 and 1997, over 18 million people learned the hard way that weight-loss cannot be safely achieved with a pill when it was revealed that the weight-loss drug Fen Phen caused heart valve problems and led to many deaths. The approval of Orlistat is yet another example of how the FDA and Big Pharma fuel the quick-fix, pill-popping mentality of consumers who hope to loose weight without making the necessary lifestyle changes to produce lasting results.

Orlistat Marketed as Alli is a Big, Fat Lie by NewsTarget - October 26, 2007

A new study published in the October 2007 issue of Pediatrics shows a strong correlation with low total cholesterol in pregnant women and the health and size of their babies.

Women with serum cholesterol less than 151 were nearly 3 times more likely to have pre-term, low-birth-weight babies, and twice as likely to bear microcephalic babies. That means babies with tiny heads; a condition not comptabile with life.

The mechanism remains "speculative, but biologically credible," say lead researchers Drs. Merialdi and Murray, because cholesterol is a precursor of placental progesterone critical to maintaining pregnancy and is a major component of plasma membranes in the placenta.

Cholesterol is the "mother hormone" and precursor of all downstream steroid hormones including pregnenolone, progesterone, estrogens and testosterone. Hormones, like nerve tissue (including the brain) are fat-based structures, which is why it is critical to have "good fats" in our diet on a regular basis.

Low Cholesterol in Moms Linked to Poor Pregnancy Outcomes by NewsTarget - October 26, 2007

Using your cell phone for 10 years or longer will double your risk of getting a tumor on a nerve connecting your ear to your brain, according to a scientific review of 11 studies.

Because children have thinner skulls than adults, and nervous systems that are still developing, the study’s lead researcher, professor Kjell Mild of Orbero University, Sweden, said children are particularly vulnerable to the tumor and should not use cell phones.

Professor Mild also said that the danger may be even greater than their study found because cancers need a minimum of 10 years to develop.

A chemical called triclosan poses a health risk, as it is a toxic compound which can promote cancer. The most shocking thing is that triclosan is commonly found in everyday consumer goods such as antibacterial soaps, deodorants, body washes, creams, lotions, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, detergents, dishwashing liquids, and yes, mouthwash and toothpaste.

Toothpaste is supposed to help clean your teeth, but what it actually does just might horrify you. When tap water meets toothpaste, the triclosan reacts freely with the chlorine in the tap water to become chloroform (a chlorinated aromatic) and is similar to the dioxins found in the compound Agent Orange. It's a chemical reaction occurring right in your mouth while you brush your teeth. And don't think you are safe once you rinse it all out of your mouth: research shows that it can remain in your mouth after brushing for up to 12 hours, and can be easily absorbed into the tongue and through mucus into the body. (Children are at the greatest risk, as they tend to swallow their toothpaste more while brushing their teeth.)

According to the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides (NCAMP), "Manufacturers of a number of triclosan-containing toothpaste and soap products claim that the active ingredient continues to work for as long as 12 hours after use. Thus, consumers are exposed to triclosan for much longer than the 20 seconds it takes to wash their hands or brush their teeth."

"These products produce low levels of chloroform, but that adds up over time. The amount of gas formed is very low but I think the key thing is that we just don't know what the effects are. However, manufacturers do have to list triclosan on their ingredients, so if consumers are worried the best advice is to avoid products with the chemical," said Giles Watson, a toxicology expert.

Confused about what makes white meat “white” and dark meat “dark?" You’re not alone. Misleading data about the good and bad sides of white and dark meat abound. Finally, here is the real truth about the meat you eat.

Dark Meat

Simply speaking, dark meats are dark because the muscles are used more (think drumsticks vs. breast meat). They have more myoglobin proteins, which help ship oxygen to your muscle cells.

When dark meat is cooked, the myoglobins turn into metmyoglobins, which are very high in iron.

White Meat

White meat contains glycogen, which is a polysaccharide of glucose, an animal starch. Animal starch is stored in your liver, then broken down into glucose when it’s needed by the white muscle.

Nutritional Differences

Dark meat contains more zinc, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, vitamins B6 and B12, amino acids, and iron than white meat. Dark meats also contain more saturated fats, along with omega-3 and omega-6 fats.

USDA Gradings: What do They Mean?

Outside of white and dark meat, there’s also “red” meat, which is typically beef. When choosing red meat, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grades them based on the marbling (the fat between the muscle tissue). Here is a breakdown of what the gradings mean:

  • Kobe Beef: 20%-25% fat content
  • USDA Prime: above 8% fat content
  • USDA Choice: 4%-8% fat content
  • USDA Select: 3%-4% fat content
  • USDA Standard: below 3% fat content

What's the Difference Between White and Dark Meat? by Dr. Mercola - November 1, 2007

State mandated drugging of children as young as three years old is a disturbing yet growing trend. Here Gregory Hession, J.D., recounts one of his cases where he tried, in vain, to uphold a heartbroken mother’s wishes not to drug her six-year-old mildly autistic son, who had been taken into state custody after her refusal.

Without the presence of a single doctor, the court decided to put the child on five powerful anti-psychotic drugs, even though none of these drugs have been approved by the FDA for use in children.

Peter Breggin, M.D., author of Toxic Psychiatry and other books about the use of psychiatric drugs, maintains that no psychiatric drug treatment corrects or improves existing brain dysfunction (such as a biochemical imbalance.) This, he says, is a major misunderstanding about psychiatry that the profession tries to hide because it places these drugs outside the scope of proper treatment for mental disorders.

Forced Medication -- Could Your Child be Next? by Dr. Mercola - November 10, 2007

Many states are seeing increases in the rate of religious exemptions from vaccinations claimed for kindergarteners, according to a review of states' vaccination records and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted by the Associated Press.

A growing number of parents are claiming religious exemptions to avoid vaccinations for their children because they are skeptical of the shots’ effectiveness or are concerned about potential side effects, including autism.

The number of parents choosing not to vaccinate is still small, as only a few thousand children were not vaccinated, compared with 3.7 million vaccinated, among children who entered kindergarten in 2005.

While all 50 states have immunization requirements, 28 allow parents to opt out for medical or religious reasons. Another 20 states allow parents to opt out for personal or philosophical reasons as well. Mississippi and West Virginia allow parents to opt out for medical reasons only.

In 20 of the 28 states that allow exemptions for medical or religious reasons, religious exemptions have doubled or tripled from 2003 to 2007.
