According to the final regulations, all
almonds must be pasteurized either thermally or with propylene oxide. The only exception to the pasteurization requirement would be for almonds
exported outside of the United States, Canada and Mexico, and those almonds are required to be labeled as “unpasteurized.” Growers are also
exempt from having to perform the pasteurization process directly if they choose, but are required to then ship the unpasteurized almonds to a
“handler” corporation where the chemical or heat pasteurization would occur before final distribution.
Although steam pasteurization falls
within the chemical standards of organic processing, it eliminates the option of organic raw almonds. Since the USDA denies any impact on the
nutritional value of the almonds, producers of steam pasteurized almonds have been and will still legally able to label and market them as “raw”
if they so choose. Nevertheless, the required pasteurization temperature of 158 degrees is well above the 110 to 120 degree breakpoint considered
as a standard for raw food and therefore raw food proponents consider this to be an endorsement of deceptive marketing practices. According to
the comments listed in the Federal Registry, one supporter of the new regulations has already begun pasteurizing his almonds and stated that “his
raw almond business has increased since implementing 100 percent treatment with no increase in quality complaints.” His identity and the size of
his farm was not disclosed.

According to a recently released study,
the number of children diagnosed with bipolar-disorder in the decade from 1994-2003 jumped – not 25%, not 50%, not 100%, not 500%, not even
1000%, but – a mind numbing 4,000%. That's 20 times faster than the growth in the diagnoses of adult bipolar-disorder over the same
decade.
We're not talking about small numbers
here like an increase from 10 children to 400 children. No! We're talking about an increase from 20,000 children treated for bi-polar disorder in
1994 to 800,000 treated in 2003.
According to study researcher Mark
Olfson, MD, MPH, professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and New York State Psychiatric Institute, "The study does
not tell us why so many more kids are being diagnosed and treated for bipolar disorder. But it gives us clues."
What clues? Among others:
* More bipolar disorder in
children should mean a corresponding increase in adults with bipolar disorder. That isn't happening. This means we're either discovering
previously unrecognized bipolar disorder in children, or that we're misdiagnosing children.
* Youths diagnosed with
bipolar disorder are more likely than adults to also be diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
* Most adults diagnosed
with bipolar disorder are female. Most children and teens diagnosed with bipolar disorder are male. Most of these people are boys around age 12,
and many have ADHD or at least are treated for that with stimulants.
* During the 10 years
covered by the study, the diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder have broadened. Many adults and young people who would not have been
considered to have bipolar disorder now are.

After looking at a database of 850
patients diagnosed with lymphatic and bone marrow cancers between 1972 and 1980, researchers from the University of Tasmania and Britain's
Bristol University found that living near high-voltage power lines might increase the risk of leukemia, lymphoma, and related conditions later in
life.
People who lived within 328 yards of a
power line up to the age of five were five times more likely to develop cancer. Those who lived within the same range to a power line at any
point during their first 15 years were three times more likely to develop cancer as an adult.

If you are a health conscious person physical activity is part of daily life.
Unless you get injured, most people who regularly perform some physical activity enjoy it because it helps them keep fit and feel great.
Conversely, health conscious people like their fruits and veggies and eat a healthy diet. But what if you get injured? Or are starting out a
workout routine, having been physically inactive for some time? According to a recent study published by the Public Library of Science, the first
step would be to eat a Mediterranean diet.

Aluminum, a common ingredient added to
antiperspirants to stop skin sweating, may be linked to breast cancer, a study by British scientists found.
The researchers tested breast samples
from 17 breast-cancer patients who had undergone mastectomies. The women who used antiperspirants had deposits of aluminum in their outer breast
tissue. Concentrations of aluminum were higher in the tissue closest to the underarm than in the central breast.
Aluminum is not normally found in the
human body, and the researchers believe the metal is being absorbed from antiperspirant sprays and roll-ons.
Animal studies have found that aluminum
can cause cancer, and the British researcher who led this study, Dr. Chris Exley from Keele University, has also suggested that the aluminum
content of sunscreens could increase users’ risk of skin cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Does Your Antiperspirant Cause Cancer? by Dr. Mercola - September 20, 2007
The White House is taking steps to kill
the FDA reform legislation recently passed in the House of Representatives that would require drug companies to publicly post clinical trial
results so that doctors, researchers and the public could review them. According to a report in Inside Health Policy, the White House sent
congressional staff an "unofficial statement of administration policy" that opposes this provision in the House bill. The blocking of this
provision would allow drug companies to continue to conduct their clinical trials in secret, hiding results from the public and cherry picking
only those clinical trials they wish to make public.
